Observation of Non-Hermitian Skin Effect in Acoustic Metamaterials

Abstract

We experimentally realize the non-Hermitian skin effect in a 1D acoustic metamaterial with engineered gain and loss. The bulk-boundary correspondence breakdown is characterized by eigenvalue winding numbers and localization lengths. A 94% localization contrast between open and periodic boundary conditions is demonstrated. Our realization establishes acoustic platforms as versatile testbeds for non-Hermitian topology.
