L2 Acquisition of Tonal Contrasts: A Longitudinal Study of Mandarin Learners
Abstract
A two-year longitudinal study of 68 English-speaking learners of Mandarin tracks tonal accuracy development using acoustic measurements and perceptual judgments. Results reveal a U-shaped trajectory for Tone 3 distinct from the monotonic improvement for Tones 1 and 4. Musical aptitude explains 34% of variance in final tonal proficiency, outweighing prior language learning history.
